Foods to Approach with Caution

Sweets, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy (saturated or hydrogenated) fats are high in calories. They provide few vitamins and minerals and therefore, little nutritional value. Many starchy vegetables are high in vitamins and fiber, but they are higher in calories and raise blood sugar much more than other vegetables containing the same vitamins, so the starchy ones are poor choices if you're trying to lose weight.

Because most of the foods on this list are concentrated sources of carbohydrates or fat or both, an exchange equivalent is a very small amount indeed. Note that we never recommend these foods -- this is not a list of approved fats, refined carbohydrates, and sweets! We list them so that if clients following a meal plan eat them, they can subtract the appropriate number of grain and fat exchanges from their daily menus.
